Gwynne A. Young Discusses Role of Judges

04.13.2012

Tampa, Fla. – Incoming Florida Bar President and Carlton Fields Tampa Shareholder, Gwynne A. Young, was quoted in Florida Trend discussing the role of judges. With elections nearing this fall and Florida judges facing a yes or no retention vote, Florida Trend’s editor, Mark R. Howard offers insight and background on Florida’s merit selection and retention system so that voters can make the best decision when voting for state judge, including the role of politics.

Young reminded readers that one judge typically handles approximately 2,500 cases each year. She told the magazine that “while we can all disagree with a decision of a court, one decision shouldn’t be grounds to remove a justice.” Comparing a judges role to that of a sports referee, Young added that the judges are there to interpret the rules and not everybody is going to agree with every call. You want judges to be fair and impartial, and you have to evaluate them on the body of their work, not one case.”
