Representative Awards

Attorneys at Carlton Fields have also been recognized for their individual pro bono and community service work. Here is a representative sampling of those awards:

  • The 2008 Tobias Simon Award from the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Florida to Sylvia Walbolt.
  • The 2007 Florida Bar President’s Pro Bono Service Award for the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit to Sylvia Walbolt
  • The 2007 Law Firm Award of Merit to Carlton Fields from the Board of Trustees of the Legal Aid Society of the Orange County Bar Association, Inc.
  • The 2006-2007 Young Lawyers Division Pro Bono Award from The Young Lawyers Division Board of Governors of The Florida Bar to Mac McCoy.
  • The 2006 National Public Service Award to David R. Punzak who was nominated by the staff and the Board of Directors of the Florida Community Loan Fund (FCLF).
  • The 2005 Florida Bar President’s Pro Bono Service Award for the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit to Kathleen McLeroy for her longstanding pro bono representation and leadership in the pro bono arena.
  • The 2005 St. Petersburg Bar Association Pro Bono Service Award to Lee H. Rightmyer for his longstanding work with the Community Law Program.
  • The 2004 Jimmy Kynes Pro Bono Award for Outstanding Pro Bono Services to Kathleen McLeroy  for her longstanding efforts as a volunteer lawyer in the Bay Area  Legal Services' Volunteer Lawyers Program.
  • The 2004 H.A.V.E. A Heart Outstanding Pro Bono Services Award to John J. Lamoureux for his exceptional pro bono service to the Hillsborough County community as a Client Intake Volunteer interviewing indigent applicants seeking legal services from Bay Area Legal Services’ Volunteer Lawyers Program.
  • The 2003 Florida Bar President’s Pro Bono Service Award for the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit to Gwynne Young for her longstanding pro bono representation and leadership in the pro bono arena.
  • The 2001 Florida Bar Foundation’s President’s Award for Excellence - to Kathleen McLeroy for her success in seeking revisions to the rules governing the IOTA program, which will yield an estimated additional $15-20 million per year in additional revenue to The Florida Bar Foundation.
  • The 2001 H.A.V.E. A Heart Outstanding Pro Bono Services Award to Kathleen McLeroy for serving as a Client Intake Volunteer, donating hundreds of hours interviewing indigent applicants seeking legal services from Bay Area Legal Services’ Volunteer Lawyers Program. 
  • The 1999 Jimmy Kynes Pro Bono Award for Outstanding Pro Bono Services to Gwynne Young.  Ms. Young was recognized by the Hillsborough County Bar Association for her longstanding efforts as a volunteer lawyer in the Bay Area Volunteer Lawyers Program and for establishing and coordinating the Carlton Fields Bay Area Conflict Project.
  • The 1999 and 1995 Pro Bono Service Awards from “Put Something Back” to Jason Murray. The award is a joint project of the Eleventh Judicial Circuit and the Dade County Bar Association.
  • ABA’s first annual “Special Service to Pro Bono Award”, presented in 1992 to Wm. Reece Smith, Jr., Carlton Fields’ Chairman Emeritus and past president of The Florida Bar, American Bar Association and the International Bar Association. As an additional honor, this award is now called the Wm. Reece Smith, Jr. Special Service to Pro Bono Award.
  • The Pro Bono Publico Award, from the ABA to Wm. Reece Smith, Jr. in 1994. This award recognizes lawyers and law firms for extraordinary contributions in extending legal services to the poor and disadvantaged.
  • The 1998 Guardian Ad Litem/Domestic Violence Pro Bono Award to Amy Furness.  Put Something Back is a joint Pro Bono Project of the Dade County Bar Association and the Eleventh Judicial Circuit, presented this award.
  • The Palm Beach County Bar Association’s Real Estate Section Pro Bono Award presented to John Hart and Henry Wulf in 1997.
  • The 1996 Eleventh Judicial Circuit and the Dade County Bar Association Pro Bono Service Award  to Douglas Chumbley
  • Certificate of Appreciation, presented to Douglas Chumbley from the United States District Court, Southern District of Florida in 1998 for service and dedication to the Volunteer Lawyers’ Project.
  • The Orange County Bar Association’s Pro Bono Award for outstanding service by a mid-size law firm in 2000.
