Woman's Initiative Network (WIN)

The Women’s Initiative Network (WIN) provides a forum for communication among women attorneys. WIN advocates for a workplace that supports the Firm’s women attorneys through formal written programs and policies consistently applied to all attorneys. WIN promotes the attraction, retention, and career advancement of female attorneys through educational and networking events.

2007 WIN Events
WIN hosts events targeted to the Firm’s female attorneys to highlight the importance of diversity within the Firm, provide networking opportunities for women attorneys, and provide women attorneys with business development information and training.

  • WIN's Miami office honored nationally renowned chef and author, Alice Waters, during its inaugural reception of “A Celebration of Women,” a series of events hosted by Carlton Fields’ women attorneys for fellow women professionals and executives in South Florida. "A Celebration of Women" provides a forum for business women to celebrate common interests and to develop professional networks and relationships.
  • WIN hosted a panel presentation to educate members on how the economics of law firms are important as an attorney advances in the profession.
  • WIN hosted a panel discussion regarding Alternative Work Schedules (AWS). Panelists included five shareholders, all of whom have been or are currently on an AWS schedule.
  • WIN hosted a presentation by Career Women’s Initiative regarding marketing and networking.
  • WIN co-sponsored and presented a Firm CLE for associates, especially female associates, on Writing Effective Self-Evaluations.
  • WIN engaged an outside consultant to hold teleconference seminars in 2008 focusing on Business Development and Self-Assessment Strategies.

2008 WIN Events

  • WIN's Miami office honored vintner Clare Luce Abbey during its spring "A Celebration of Women" event, which was enthusiastically attended and received by fellow women professionals and executives from South Florida.

Pro Bono and Community Outreach
Carlton Fields encourages attorneys to participate actively in pro bono representation. Over the coming year, the Women’s Initiative Network will undertake a pro bono project advocating clemency for women incarcerated for killing their abusers. As part of the initiative, WIN will identify, select, and oversee the preparation and filing of clemency petitions for women in Florida prisons who were convicted after a trial or guilty plea when evidence of abuse was not raised or, if raised, was presented ineffectively or disallowed by the judge, denying the women due process and fair trials based on the facts of their cases.

Recent civic, charitable, and community activities include:

  • Participation in Election Protection, a national voter protection program to assist South Florida voters in casting their ballots on Election Day.
  • Hosting a field-day for domestic violence victims at a shelter in Tampa.
  • Participation in Tallahassee Women Lawyers 2006 Legacy of Excellence Law Day Program, designed to expose female students in the 8th-12th grades to the legal, social, and educational opportunities for women in the Tallahassee community.
