Q: How do I find a mentor?
A: Each first-year and lateral associate is initially assigned a 'provisional' mentor. After they have been with the firm approximately six months, associates are provided the opportunity to choose a mentor. All associates have a mentor. Associates are also encouraged to develop informal mentoring relationships with shareholders at the firm.
Q: How are associates assigned to practice areas or departments?
A: Associates express an interest in a practice area and, based on needs for additional assistance, an assignment to a primary practice area is made. Associates may request to join additional practice areas with the approval of the Practice Group Leader.
Q: Do associates rotate through various practice areas?
A: Associates do not participate in a formal rotation program. Our team approach to practice creates opportunities for associates to gain experience in other practice areas, if desired.
Q: How long until I work directly with clients?
A: Associates generally have opportunities to work with clients early in their careers at the firm. The team approach to practice affords that experience early on.
Q: How are associates evaluated at the firm?
A: Annual performance appraisal interviews are conducted with each associate, and senior attorneys give constructive feedback to associates on an on-going basis. Lawyers also provide monthly written evaluations on work projects for first-year lawyers and new lateral associates. An assigned attorney also reviews the written work of new associates on an on-going basis during their first year in practice.
Q: Are there any means by which associates have a voice to management at the firm?
A: Associates from each office are elected by associates to serve on the Associate Relations Committee. This committee works directly with the firm’s President and the Chairs of various committees which impact associate life. This structure provides a voice to associates and a means of communication to management and also to associates. Carlton Fields also affords an “open door” policy to all attorneys.
Q: What is Carlton Fields’ policy on office dress code?
A: We enjoy a business casual dress policy in all of our offices year-round.
