05/21/2009

MIAMI - Donna K. Knapton, Of Counsel in Carlton Fields’ Miami office, was recently awarded the 2009 “Put Something Back” Pro Bono Award for Real Property. “Put Something Back” is a joint pro bono project of the Eleventh Judicial Circuit and the Dade County Bar Association.

Knapton was honored by the 11th Judicial Circuit/Dade County Bar for outstanding pro bono service in 2008-2009. Her work included assisting a 75-year-old widower deceived by family members who attempted to take his home following his wife’s death. A multiple count complaint was filed on his behalf against various relatives. After almost 200 hours of hard work and determination, thanks to Knapton and Carlton Fields’ support, he prevailed in the case and regained sole ownership of the home he had shared with his wife for 30 years. Knapton was recognized for her work during the Dade County Bar Association Annual Awards Luncheon on May 19, 2009.

"Put Something Back" was established in 1991 pursuant to the order of the Florida Supreme Court mandating pro bono programs for all circuits in Florida. "Put Something Back" is the successor of the DCBA "Public Interest Law Bank" established in 1981 which later became the DCBA "Volunteer Lawyers Program." "Put Something Back" recruits and trains private lawyers who are assigned cases through the service. More than 7,000 Miami-Dade lawyers are members of the program and have provided tens of thousands of hours of free legal service to thousands of disadvantaged residents of Miami-Dade County.

Knapton is a former Senior Counsel in the Securities & Exchange Commission’s (SEC) Division of Enforcement. Her practice now includes representation of companies and individuals in investigations and enforcement proceedings by the SEC, securities industry self-regulatory organizations, state securities regulators, and other government agencies, as well as investment adviser and broker-dealer registration and compliance counseling, and general business litigation.
