Overview

William Gruitza is a health care attorney and certified compliance professional with more than a decade of experience focused exclusively on health law and compliance matters. He provides legal counsel to a wide range of industry stakeholders, including solo practitioners, physician groups, hospital systems, universities, laboratories, and durable medical equipment suppliers.

William focuses his practice on health care transactions, complex referral source arrangements, and regulatory compliance. He has particular knowledge and experience addressing federal health care program requirements, fraud, waste and abuse enforcement, health care marketing for laboratories, hospitals and physician groups (both direct-to-consumer and co-marketing arrangements), Medicare Part B, physician contracts, and group service agreements. William has designed, implemented, and managed numerous large-scale ethics and compliance programs, and successfully counseled clients through government and commercial payer audits, overpayments, OIG self-disclosure protocol, and various administrative enforcement actions.

Prior to joining Carlton Fields, William served as vice president of legal and compliance for one of Florida’s largest value-based care platforms. He is the former chief compliance officer for one of Palm Beach County’s premier regional medical centers and spent four years as a hospital compliance and privacy officer with Tenet Healthcare, where he managed the compliance programs for multiple South Florida hospitals and affiliated outpatient care and diagnostic centers. In addition to compliance, William’s legal background includes globally recognized academic research institutions and medical centers, having served as in-house corporate compliance counsel with the Cleveland Clinic Florida, and as a law clerk with the University of Pennsylvania and Penn Medicine’s Office of General Counsel.

William is certified in health care compliance by the Health Care Compliance Association, is a Florida CME lecturer on medical ethics, law, and policy, and beginning in 2024, as an adjunct professor at the University Miami School of Law, teaching a course on health care fraud and compliance.
