Carlton Fields Shareholder Dan Weede was featured in a Tampa Bay Business Journal article about restaurateurs’ reactions to the federal Paycheck Protection Program, and how the assistance has helped, if at all.

Several restaurant owners observed that the Paycheck Protection Program’s stipulations requiring recipients to spend 75% of the total assistance on payroll in an eight-week period does not allow any flexibility for restaurants that may not be fully operational, or that may not be experiencing their typical demand.

Though the regulations are not ideal for restaurants, Weede still advises owners to try to take advantage of the assistance.

"For the hotels and restaurateurs who do employ so many people — it really affects that social part of our economy," said Weede. "We’re telling them — everyone’s a little bit different — but make the stretch if you can do it. Hiring and then maybe firing somebody eight weeks later is not ideal, but you don’t know what’s happening in eight weeks."

Weede cautions clients choosing to opt out of the assistance altogether that bringing business back to normal can be costly.
