Property & Casualty Insurance   |   November 11, 2020

Miami, Fla. – Carlton Fields is pleased to announce that Shareholder Steven J. Brodie was honored with the American Jewish Committee’s (AJC) 2020 Judge Learned Hand Award at an event held yesterday evening, November 10. The award, considered among the highest of honors within the legal profession for excellence and lifelong contributions to the industry, recognizes profound dedication to humanitarian principles, individual rights and democratic values to advance a more just society.

“We are honored to recognize Steve’s contributions to the profession, as well as his outstanding leadership in the Jewish and non-Jewish community,” said Brian Siegal, director of AJC’s Greater Miami and Broward Regional Office. “With this award, he joins an illustrious roster of legal luminaries who are together helping make our world a better place.”

Brodie is co-chair of Carlton Fields’ national Property and Casualty Insurance Practice and serves as co-managing shareholder of the firm’s Miami office. In the course of his four-decade career, Brodie’s professional achievements have been recognized in South Florida and across the United States.

His unique ability to bring opposite parties to the deal-making table and his solution-oriented approach is why some of the nation’s largest insurance companies and others have sought his counsel for decades. He has been recognized and featured in The Best Lawyers in America, Florida Super Lawyers, Florida Trend’s Florida Legal Elite, and South Florida Business Journal’s South Florida Power Leaders.

While his professional accomplishments are many, Brodie is deeply involved in civic and charitable organizations. He has held numerous positions at the Greater Miami Jewish Federation and currently serves on its board of directors and executive committee. Additionally, he serves on the board and executive committee of the United Way of Miami Dade and he recently completed a three-year term on the United Way’s annual campaign. He also serves on the board and executive committee of the Baptist Health Foundation. Mr. Brodie and his wife, Shelly, serve as South Florida chairs of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). In addition, he is a past president of the University of Miami Citizen’s Board and former member of the University’s Board of Trustees.

“Words cannot express how honored I am to receive this distinguished award,” said Brodie. “My pursuit to give back to our community and provide extraordinary service to our clients are some of my greatest passions. This award has a deep meaning to me because of what it stands for — the core ideals that Judge Learned Hand himself espoused — tolerance, protection of individual liberties, and a sense of duty to give back.”

The Brodie family is carrying on a legacy of leading philanthropic efforts that benefit South Florida’s diverse community. Brodie’s late father, Myron J. “Mike” Brodie, was a well-known community leader who served as president of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation for 20 years.

AJC is a non-profit organization dedicated to advocating for the Jewish people. AJC is the leading global Jewish advocacy organization and is committed to advancing human rights and democratic values in the U.S. and worldwide. AJC established the annual award in 1964 to recognize leaders in the legal profession for their excellence and contributions to the practice of law. The award honors the memory of Judge Learned Hand, a highly distinguished individual recognized as heir to Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes’ legacy of a Jurist and Poet of Liberty. Judge Hand, a graduate of Harvard and its law school, was widely admired as a Dean among American jurists, and was well-known for the extensive range of decisions he tendered that centered on questions of constitutional rights and antitrust legislation.
