Andrew (Drew) Hinkes

Of Counsel


Drew Hinkes is nationally recognized for his experience in cryptocurrency and blockchain-related legal issues. He advises blockchain, fintech, and financial services clients in a wide variety of legal matters. He is also an experienced trial attorney who has litigated a variety of complex commercial matters, with a particular emphasis on fiduciary representation, data privacy, and cybersecurity cases.

Drew is an adjunct professor at the New York University Stern School of Business and New York University School of Law where he has taught “Digital Currency, Blockchains, and the Future of Financial Services” since 2018. Drew is also general counsel, chief legal officer, and co-founder of Athena Blockchain Inc., a financial services company focused on tokenized investments. He frequently speaks and writes about digital assets and blockchain technology for legal, financial, and industry audiences. CoinDesk nominated Drew as one of its Most Influential People in Blockchain in 2017.


  • Represented multiple court-appointed receivers in actions brought by the Securities Exchange Commission, the Federal Trade Commission, and the Florida Attorney General's Office.
  • ​Defended Fortune 1000 company in litigations in multiple state and federal district courts related to alleged consumer fraud.
  • Represented victims of data breaches related to their reporting and compliance obligations under state and federal law, including HIPAA and HITECH Act, and developed litigation defense strategy.
  • Represented employers to obtain injunctions related to violations of restrictive covenants and tortious interference.
  • Litigated complex dispute regarding access to data held on a proprietary cloud storage platform, including extensive litigation of third-party privacy rights in federal bankruptcy court.
