Overview
Michael Yaeger’s practice focuses on cybersecurity, government investigations, and related compliance and litigation. In the federal government, he served as a cybercrime prosecutor; in the private sector, he has led internal investigations and data incident response and privacy litigations. Together, his government and private sector work has given him deep experience managing risks that cross the boundaries between criminal, regulatory, and civil litigation.
In addition to leading incident response and related litigation, Michael advises corporate boards and management on legal issues and best practices regarding cybersecurity compliance, including interacting with law enforcement, regulators, and other parties in the event of a cyber incident or business interruption.
Michael’s clients have mostly been institutions and individuals in heavily regulated sectors such as financial services and health care, but have ranged from insurance companies, banks, well-established private investment funds, broker-dealers, payments companies, and academic medical centers, to fintech startups and entrepreneurs. He has also assisted many academic institutions. A number of his matters have involved representing clients simultaneously in investigations by the Department of Justice or a state attorney general, the SEC or another civil regulator (such as the New York State Department of Financial Services ), and private class actions.
Before joining the firm, Michael was an assistant U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York, where he served as his office’s co-coordinator for Computer Hacking and Intellectual Property crimes and investigated and prosecuted cases in the Business and Securities Fraud Section of the Criminal Division.
Michael clerked for the Honorable Samuel A. Alito Jr. of the Third Circuit Court of Appeals (now a U.S. Supreme Court justice) and the Honorable Milton Pollack of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. He received his J.D. from Yale Law School and his B.A. from Yale University.
