On the last day of the 2009 Legislative Session, Senator Ken Pruitt (R-Port St. Lucie) resigned his seat from the Florida Senate, effective August 4, 2009. Thus we expect there to be a special election for his seat over the summer months. The likely candidates are:

- Former Representative Art Argenio (R) – Elected in a special election and served one term; chiropractor, and
- Bill Ramos (D) – Ran unsuccessfully against Representative Fetterman (D) in the 2008 primary; VP of a title company.
