Harassment in the Workplace: On Your Best Behavior

Carlton Fields Labor and Employment Shareholder Allison Oasis Kahn was quoted in Pizza Today’s article, “Harassment in the Workplace: On Your Best Behavior,” about the importance of food service industry employers cultivating and enforcing workplace environments free from sexual harassment.

The article explains that having a clear understanding of the types of sexual harassment situations that may arise in the industry and how to prevent and properly respond to them, helps restaurant owners protect their businesses from related legal risks.

Professionals in the field, including Kahn, recommend taking a proactive approach to sexual harassment that includes formalizing a written policy strictly prohibiting such activity, ensuring that all starting employees are aware of the protocol upon hire, and hosting annual refresher trainings for staff, managers, and owners.

“Training is not about taking all the fun out of a workplace,” Kahn said. “It’s about the law and about respect and safety of employees.”
