Carlton Fields’ Allison Oasis Kahn Featured in Tampa Bay Business Journal on Supreme Court’s Ruling on Title VII of Civil Rights Act
Carlton Fields labor and employment attorney Allison Oasis Kahn was featured in a Tampa Bay Business Journal article on the Supreme Court's recent ruling regarding Title VII of the Civil Rights Act.
The Supreme Court handed down a decision blocking employment discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, a major move forward for LGBT equality.
"This is a landmark decision,” Oasis Kahn stated. “The court said there was no way to separate out gender identity or orientation without separating out sex.”
While many areas of the country and companies have already been operating under this ordinance, this update provides more protections for employees, permitting them to file for punitive damages should they be fired for sexual orientation or gender identity.
“The [terminated] employees are more likely to receive compensation, and a greater amount of compensation now,” she said.
