Valerie Makarewicz was quoted in Reuters in an article titled “Exclusive: Tax Prosecutions Plunge as Trump Shifts Crime-Fighting Efforts.” The article discusses the decline in federal tax prosecutions to their lowest level in decades, as the Trump administration cut the ranks of attorneys and agents who pursue those cases and shifted its focus to other crime-fighting efforts.

Makarewicz, who previously served as an assistant U.S. attorney in the Los Angeles office before joining Carlton Fields, said the office was once known for its tax-case specialists, but its ranks have dwindled from 10 to “three or four,” and replacing them won’t be easy, she said.

“It’s a niche field and developing that expertise takes time,” she said.
