ERISA Lawyer Lowell J. Walters Joins Carlton Fields

Tampa, Fla. – Carlton Fields is pleased to announce that Lowell J. Walters has joined the firm as of counsel in its Tampa office. Walters will practice in the firm’s Business Transactions practice group.

With 16 years of experience, Walters’ practice focuses on employee benefit matters involving the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA) and/or the Internal Revenue Code, addressing issues affecting retirement and welfare plans for for-profit, non-profit, and governmental employers. Specifically, he counsels business owners and entities with respect to the tax treatment of their retirement and welfare plans and works with plan administrators, the Internal Revenue Service, the Department of Labor, other regulatory agencies such as the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Florida Department of Management Services, with respect to compliance with the Internal Revenue Code, ERISA, and state law. This includes correcting plans when an earlier error is discovered.

Through Walters’ employee benefits work, he has also gained experience and insight into various employment tax issues, employee versus independent contractor classifications, and mergers and acquisitions.

“The addition of Lowell provides our clients with access to highly technical ERISA and benefit plan expertise,” said Jim Walker, chair of Carlton Fields’ Business Transactions practice group. “We are delighted that he has joined us.”

Walters said, “I’m impressed by Carlton Fields’ strong national platform and its capabilities to handle sophisticated business transactions. The firm’s collaborative culture among its lawyers and with clients is consistent with my own approach, and I’m excited to be a part of the firm.”

Prior to joining Carlton Fields, Walters was a shareholder with Gray Robinson in Tampa. He received his LL.M. in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law, his J.D. from Brooklyn Law School, and his B.A. from Rutgers College of Rutgers University.
