Carlton Fields’ Joseph H. Lang Jr. Appointed As ALI Adviser

Tampa, Fla. – Carlton Fields Shareholder Joseph H. Lang Jr. was appointed as an adviser on the American Law Institute (ALI)’s Restatement of the Law Third, Torts: Defamation and Privacy project. He has long served as an elected member of ALI.

ALI produces scholarly work to clarify, modernize, and otherwise improve the law. That work includes restatements of the law, which guide courts with clear, precise language that reflects common law as it currently stands. The Restatement of the Law Third, Torts: Defamation and Privacy will contribute addresses torts dealing with dignitary harms, including defamation, invasions of privacy, as well as monetary harms like the right of publicity and business disparagement. Among other issues, the updates will cover the substantial body of new issues relating to the internet and social media.

Lang has extensive experience representing clients before and at trial on legal issues, motions practice, preservation of error, and jury instructions, and then throughout the appellate process. At trial, he has represented clients in automotive, insurance, medical device, negligence, and smoking and health cases. He serves as co-chair of Carlton Fields’ Pro Bono Committee and is a past chair of the Florida Supreme Court Committee on Standard Jury Instructions in Civil Cases. Lang earned his J.D. from the University of Florida College of Law, his LL.M. from Georgetown University Law Center, and his B.A. from the University of Florida.
