Distinguished Chief Operating Officer Frederick B. O’Malley Joins Carlton Fields

O’Malley Brings More Than 25 Years of Executive Law Firm Management Experience

Carlton Fields is pleased to announce the hiring of Frederick B. O’Malley as Chief Operating Officer (COO). With more than 25 years of executive law firm management experience, O’Malley will oversee the core business functions of the national firm, including financial management and administrative operations.

“Carlton Fields’ growth and success are a matter of record,” said O’Malley. “I am thrilled to be a part of the team and eager to help support the firm as it continues to reach new goals,” said O’Malley.

O’Malley’s arrival coincides with the retirement of long-time COO Anastasia “Annie” Hiotis. Hiotis started her career at Carlton Fields in 1992, serving as Director of Office Operations and Human Resources. In 2001 she was promoted to COO to oversee firm operations.

“We’re excited to welcome Fred to Carlton Fields. He is uniquely qualified to drive operational excellence,” said Gary L. Sasso, President and CEO, Carlton Fields. “Fred has extensive knowledge of the industry and experience working at mid-size and large law firms, and I’m confident he will transition seamlessly into his new role.”

Sasso added: “I want to thank Annie for setting such high standards throughout her nearly 30 years of service to the firm. Her superb business skills and personal integrity have left an indelible mark. We will miss her very much.”

O’Malley is the former COO and CFO of Shutts & Bowen LLP, where he managed all administrative and financial operations. He has been recognized as the top COO in Miami-Dade by South Florida Business & Wealth. He is a “distinguished” member of the Association of Legal Administrators (ALA), a worldwide professional organization that provides support to professionals involved in the management of law firms, corporate legal departments, and government legal agencies. O’Malley has held various leadership positions within the ALA including president of the Maryland chapter. He is also an active member of the Large Firm Principal Administrators (LFA) Caucus of ALA, currently serving as chairman of the LFA steering committee. LFA Caucus membership comprises COOs and Executive Director level positions of large law firms with 100 lawyers or more.

O’Malley is also the chair of the Florida COO Networking Group comprised of COOs and Executive Directors of Florida’s large law firms. He often presents on various matters related to legal administrative and financial operations. Most recently he spoke at the Thomson Reuters Annual Law Firm COO & CFO Forum in New York. He earned his M.B.A from the University of Maryland and his B.A. from West Virginia University.
