Former Georgia State Law Professor Cass Brewer Joins Carlton Fields’ Business Transactions Practice in Atlanta

ATLANTA, GA – Cassady “Cass” Brewer has joined Carlton Fields’ Business Transactions Practice as a shareholder in the firm’s Atlanta office. He most recently was a tenured professor of law at Georgia State University College of Law and remains an emeritus professor of law at the university.

Brewer focuses on tax law and business transactions, with deep experience in the intersection of tax-exempt organizations and for-profit enterprises. His background in both academia and private legal practice gives him a unique perspective in advising clients on complex tax and business matters. During his tenure at Georgia State Law, his courses covered federal income taxation, nonprofit organizations, and business taxation, including corporate and partnership tax.

“We are thrilled to welcome Cass to the firm,” said Jordan August, chair of the firm’s Business Transactions Practice. “His distinctive experience spanning academia and transactional law related to complex tax and business matters will be an invaluable resource to the firm and our clients.”

Brewer has played a significant role in shaping nonprofit and business law in Georgia. He co-founded the Nonprofit Law Section of the State Bar of Georgia and helped modernize Georgia’s Nonprofit Corporation Code. He was also involved in drafting Georgia’s Limited Liability Company Act, Limited Liability Partnership Act, and the state's benefit corporation legislation. Brewer is also a fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel.

“I practiced law for nearly 25 years before I went into teaching,” said Brewer. “I enjoyed teaching, especially my many talented students, but returning to the practice of law has always appealed to me. After almost 14 years in the classroom, I’m anxious to once again help clients achieve their objectives in a tax-efficient manner. Carlton Fields is the ideal place for this next chapter of my career given its strong reputation, particularly in the tax and nonprofit sectors.”

Brewer obtained his LL.M. in taxation from New York University, his J.D. from the University of Arkansas School of Law, and his B.S. from Vanderbilt University. Brewer is also a frequent speaker at tax institutes across the country.
