Christopher C. Ash
Senior Insurance Counsel
Overview
Chris Ash is a skilled litigator with more than 30 years of experience representing clients in a wide range of insurance and reinsurance disputes. His work in insurance and reinsurance, which has been a core part of his practice since the mid-1990s, reflects a deep, career-long passion and broad experience across all facets of the industry — from defense to coverage to reinsurance — and includes high-profile matters such as asbestos and environmental claims, the Enron collapse, major catastrophes, COVID-related litigation, and the World Trade Center attacks. This range of experience gives him the ability to quickly identify key legal and strategic issues and develop practical, results-oriented solutions.
Over the course of his career, Chris has taken and defended more than a hundred depositions, conducted numerous bench and jury trials, and represented clients in dozens of arbitrations. He has examined and cross-examined scores of witnesses and worked closely with expert consultants in preparing reports and testimony. He collaborates regularly with in-house counsel and business leaders to align litigation strategy with broader organizational goals. Additionally, he frequently advises clients on contract drafting, dispute avoidance, and risk mitigation.
Throughout his time in practice, Chris has practiced at both large firms on the East Coast and smaller practices in the Mountain West. Before joining Carlton Fields, he led a litigation and real estate-focused boutique law firm for nearly two decades and performed contract work for large firms in New York City. His work has spanned commercial torts, noncompete and trade secret enforcement, insurance coverage and reinsurance disputes, landlord-tenant matters, and both plaintiff- and defense-side personal injury litigation. He has also advised small and midsize businesses on contract and real estate issues and represented individual clients in a variety of civil claims.
